St. Charles Parish Hospital is seeking the \"\"<\/a>public\u2019s approval on an April 21 ballot for a $15 million loan intended for several projects, including an after-hours and primary-care clinic in Destrehan and further cardiac-care services at the main facility in Luling.<\/p>\n

According to a report by The Times-Picayune<\/em>, St. Charles Hospital is in negotiations for a BP-owned property at the corner of I-310 and River Road, near East Regional Library. BP has already hired the Prince of Wales-headed charity The Prince\u2019s Foundation for the Built Environment to develop a mixed-use town center-type project on the property.<\/p>\n

During business hours, the Destrehan healthcare facility will provide services such as internal medicine, OB-GYN, bone care, advanced heart diagnostics and pediatrics. Outside business hours, the clinic would double as an emergency-care facility for medical services such as fractures that do not require the care of a typical emergency room. A significant aspect of the clinic will be the cost of care: Fees will be at the level of doctor\u2019s offices, far lower than those charged for emergency-room visits.<\/p>\n

Since 2003, voters have approved $30 million in upgrades and expansions to St. Charles Parish Hospital, including a new wing for internal, behaviorial and intensive care, operational since May 2008; an occupational medicine clinic that opened in December; and a new emergency department that is opening next month.<\/p>\n

In further healthcare news, The Times-Picayune<\/em> reports the Daughters of Charity, in partnership with the city of New Orleans, will open a temporary low-income clinic in eastern New Orleans. The neighborhood clinic will offer free basic medical care, as well as dental and optometric care services, counseling and preventive care.<\/p>\n

The healthcare facility opens next month on Read Boulevard, next door to the former Methodist Hospital, which is being transformed into an 80-bed community hospital by the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System and will open late next year.<\/p>\n

The Daughters plan to establish a $7 million permanent clinic in another building on the site by late 2013.<\/p>\n
