Local business and city leaders have embarked on a new project that is aiming to provide permanent housing to San Diego\u2019s homeless population. The Mission Times Courier<\/em> reports the groundbreaking of the project took place on January 26 on the rooftop of a 6th Avenue parking structure. Guest speakers at the event included San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, San Diego Council President Pro Tem Kevin Faulconer and City Councilmember Todd Gloria.<\/p>\n

The project entitled Connections Housing aims to transform the facility into an integrated service and residential center, with a main goal of ending homelessness in San Diego. Bob McElroy, president of the Alpha Project, a non-profit organization, said the facility will feature a community health clinic, interim beds as well as permanent supportive housing units.<\/p>\n

San Diego Housing Commission President Richard C. Gentry, announced the residential program will be supported by the Housing Commission via $1 million annually in housing vouchers from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development. Steven Gentry, community investment management director of UnitedHealth Group, announced the group will also invest $15 million in the project.<\/p>\n

Other partners of the project include: Affirmed Housing Group, Family Health Centers of San Diego, People Assisting the Homeless (PATH), PATH Ventures, Centre City Development Corporation, the San Diego Housing Commission, Turner Construction Company and U.S. Bank.
