<\/a> parking structure designed to streamline car rentals at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport will debut on May 17. The project\u2019s\u00a0sustainable \u00a0features earned Silver LEED certification late last month\u2014the biggest consolidated rental car facility to be so recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council.<\/p>\nAirport officials are touting a newly efficient system for transporting passengers from their terminals to the new facility. A standardized fleet of 29 natural gas-powered buses operated by the Port of Seattle will replace vans owned by individual car rental companies.<\/p>\n
Following a four-minute trip, travelers will arrive at the 2.1 million-square-foot structure, which will house 12 rental car suppliers. After picking up their vehicles, customers will be able to drive directly onto State Route 518, the Puget Sound Business Journal reports.<\/p>\n
The 5,400-space facility offers fueling and washing areas, and will be able to handle up to 14,000 vehicles daily. The opening of the parking structure will also free 3,200 spaces at the airport\u2019s short-term parking garage. The structure\u2019s design allows for the future installation of compressed natural gas and electric vehicle charging stations.<\/p>\n
The project is the biggest component of a $419 million airport infrastructure investment that also includes a new bus maintenance facility and off-site road improvements. Passenger fees will finance the project under a 30-year deal between the port and the rental car providers.<\/p>\n
