Johns Hopkins Hospital will open its new $1.1 billion patient care building in April 2012. It is\u00a0one of the nation\u2019s largest hospital construction projects. Johns Hopkins officials say it will mark the beginning of “a new era\u201d for the nation’s top hospital.\u00a0The construction project started in 2006. The 1.6 million-square-foot facility is rising on five acres and includes two 12-story patient towers, 560 private patient rooms, 33 state-of-the-art, spacious operating rooms, and expansive new adult and pediatric emergency departments as well as the most sophisticated diagnostic imaging equipment.
\nConstruction of the towers is complete and work on the interior portion of the project has started. Philanthropic contributions have provided 36 percent of the funding for the new building. It was designed to provide excellent care with greater comfort and privacy for hospital patients and their families.<\/p>\n
Patient rooms will be outfitted with private bathrooms and sleeping accommodations for family members. An interactive television network with Internet, movies, games and clinical team updates is also available, as well as valet parking. A 30,000-square-foot modern kitchen will provide patients with enhanced menu options.<\/p>\n
The Johns Hopkins Children\u2019s Center will move into one of the towers which has been named the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center, after the late mother of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The other tower is named the Sheikh Zayed Tower, a tribute paid by UAE president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to his father the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first president of the United Arab Emirates. It will house a full range of cardiovascular services, as well as neurology services and neurosurgery, labor and delivery and a wide range of surgical procedures. The towers are joined at the base by an eight-story building, home to operating rooms, emergency departments and public areas.<\/p>\n
The hospital\u2019s main entrance is larger than a football field, helping vehicles drop off and pick up patients faster. Just across the street, the Orleans Street Garage will be exclusively for patients and visitors. The garage is connected to the new building through two glass walkway bridges above Orleans Street.<\/p>\n
The project has provided more than 4,700 construction jobs, with almost 1,000 of those workers living in Baltimore City. It will also provide 700 permanent jobs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
