Work started January 26 on the new twin-building Social Security Administration facility in Northwest Baltimore. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake attended the groundbreaking ceremonies together with City Council Member Rikki Spector; Robert A. Peck, Commissioner of Public Buildings for the U.S. General Services Administration; Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security; Vernon L. Simms, chief of staff for U.S. Congressman Elijah Cummings, and other officials.<\/p>\n
JBG Companies, in partnership with Baltimore-based Klein Enterprises, will develop and own the building and lease it back to the Social Security Administration for the next 20 years at $38.83 per square foot. The new center is expected to open by 2014.<\/p>\n
The complex will be located at 6100 Wabash Ave. and will replace the existing SSA Metro West facility at 300 N. Greene St. Once the SSA moves out, the GSA intends to dispose of the Metro West complex, with the University of Maryland among potential users.<\/p>\n
The $150 million, environmentally advanced facility will encompass more than 11 acres and result in 538,000 square feet of office space, a day care center and 1,076 parking spaces. It will be home to up to 2,300 SSA employees and will feature two office buildings, five and seven stories. The complex will also include a green roof and a large park area and it has been designed to LEED Silver certification. AECOM is the project architect and Bethesda\u2019s Clark Construction will be the general contractor.<\/p>\n
Chevy Chase-based JBG Companies was founded in 1960. The company has vast experience in developing office, residential, retail, and hotels. It has developed, owned or managed over 30 million square feet of office space, 5.5 million square feet of retail space, 15,000 residential units and 15 hotel properties totaling over 4,500 rooms.<\/p>\n
The project is one of the largest and most expensive planned for Baltimore over the next several years. The project will create hundreds of construction jobs and help revitalize the area by keeping jobs in the city.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
