\"\"<\/a>Wayne State University (WSU) is about to break ground on one of the largest development projects in its almost 150-year history. The university plans to create a 200,000-square-foot biomedical research center in Midtown Detroit and, in order to complete the project, hopes to attract a $30 million grant from the state\u2014a budget proposal from Gov. Rick Snyder that is yet to be approved\u2014while the remaining $63 million will come from a combination of private donations and debt collections.<\/p>\n

As recently reported by Crain\u2019s Detroit Business<\/em>, the new Multidisciplinary Biomedical Research Building will be located between the Detroit Medical Center and Henry Ford Hospital on Woodward Avenue. If the federal incentive is approved, the American Beauty Iron Building at Burroughs and Woodward avenues will be demolished and transformed into a parking lot serving the biomedical research facility. The actual construction work could start in November with a revamping of the historic Dalgleish Cadillac building, a 127,000-square-foot structure designed by architect Albert Kahn in 1902, and expanding it with 70,000 square feet of space on the north side. An estimated date of completion was set for January 2015.<\/p>\n

The new biomedical research facility would house various university programs in cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, bioinformatics and computational biology and biomedical engineering. The laboratory space will be big enough to house around 450 researchers (48 principal investigators, each of them with 8 to 10 member teams).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
