{"id":1004051483,"date":"2012-09-02T20:15:42","date_gmt":"2012-09-03T04:15:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/synd.yardi.com\/?p=65856"},"modified":"2020-04-07T09:19:05","modified_gmt":"2020-04-07T17:19:05","slug":"historic-state-savings-bank-building-to-be-replaced-by-parking-garage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.commercialsearch.com\/news\/historic-state-savings-bank-building-to-be-replaced-by-parking-garage\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic State Savings Bank Building to be Replaced by Parking Garage?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Veronica Grecu, Associate Editor<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Canadian entrepreneur and real estate investor Andreas Apostolopoulos has caused quite a stir among architectural preservationists after revealing tentative plans to create more parking space in Detroit\u2019s Financial District by tearing down one of the city\u2019s historic buildings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/synd.yardi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2012\/08\/StateSavingsBankDetroit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-65878\" title=\"StateSavingsBankDetroit\" src=\"https:\/\/synd.yardi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2012\/08\/StateSavingsBankDetroit.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a>Located at 151 Fort Street, the State Savings Bank structure was built in two separate phases in 1900 by McKim, Mead and White architects of New York; and 1915 by local architectural firm Donaldson and Meier in the Beaux Arts style that illustrates McKim\u2019s work during that time. The building served as a bank for eight decades until 1980, when it was acquired by 151 Partnership and became the world headquarters of Silvers, Inc., an office supply company. In 1982 the State Savings Bank building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As reported by <em>Detroit Free Press<\/em>, the building was purchased earlier this month by Triple Properties, a Toronto-based real estate company owned by Apostolopoulos. Triple Properties, which also owns the Pontiac Superdome and the iconic Penobscot Building located next to the State Savings Bank facility, paid $700,000 to Torre &amp; Bruglio, a Pontiac-based contracting firm. According to the <em>Free Press<\/em>, Apostolopoulos is in the early phases of finding ways to create a parking garage within the bank building so that the fa\u00e7ade would not be altered.
