Edison, N.J., is now home to the largest modular data center on the planet. i\/o Data Centers just opened i\/o New Jersey, an 830,000 square-foot facility formerly home to a New York Times printing plant.<\/p>\n

Fronting the New Jersey Turnpike on 23 acres off Woodbridge Ave., the property that now houses i\/o New Jersey was originally developed as a nearly 1.4 million square-foot complex for the Times in 1992. In 2007, with consolidation in mind, the paper acquired the 83-acre complex–which consisted of the 1 million square-foot printing plant and an adjacent 400,000 square-foot distribution warehouse and 25-acre development site–from Z Edison L.P. for $140 million and immediately disposed of the asset in a $92 million sale-leaseback transaction with KIF Property Trust. The Times ultimately vacated the property in 2008. <\/p>\n

In the Manhattan\/New Jersey market, as commercial real estate services firm Grubb & Ellis Co. notes in a 2010 year-end report, approximately 26 MW of high-end data center space accounting for 140,000 square feet of raised floor space was either available or scheduled to come online by the close of 2011. However, the new i\/o facility can accommodate up to up to 100 MW. i\/o president Anthony Wanger said that unlike traditional data center projects that could take years to build, the property will have immediate capacity.<\/p>\n

As per the Grubb & Ellis report, the call for additional state-of-the-art data space across the country, will only grow louder with the Reid-McConnell Tax Relief Act of 2010 in place. “The bill calls for 100 percent bonus depreciation on deduction allowances for investments in new business equipment placed in service between Sept. 8, 2010, and Dec. 31, 2011.”<\/p>\n

The newly opened New Jersey location marks i\/o’s third data center; the company’s portfolio includes Arizona’s 125,000 square-foot i\/o Scottsdale and the 538,000 square-foot i\/o Phoenix, which holds the distinction of being the seventh largest data center in the world. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
