Development of Eighth Avenue Place, a 2 million-square-foot office and retail property in Calgary, AB, takes a big step forward as Superm\u00e9tal Structures Inc. comes on board to install the 11,000 tons of structural steel that will serve as the skeleton for the 50-story high-rise involved in the two-tower project. Matco Investments is behind the $1 billion project (pictured). Superm\u00e9tal was chosen for the job by EllisDon Construction, the contractor for Eighth Avenue Place–more familiarly known as Penny Lane Towers–on behalf of Matco. Situated downtown in the heart of the city’s Financial District on a parcel that had been home to the Penny Lane Mall, Eighth Avenue Place’s first tower will feature approximately 1 million square feet of office space, 55,000 square feet of retail offerings, as well as a six-level underground parking facility to accommodate nearly 1,150 vehicles. Designed by Gibbs Gage Architects, the structure will adhere to LEED Gold standards and has already been designated Canada’s first office skyscraper to be pre-certified in the LEED for Core and Shell development category. The second segment of Eighth Avenue Place will consist of a 37-story office building encompassing approximately 800,000 square feet that will be constructed as demand dictates.
