American Hotel Development Partners L.L.C. unveiled plans today to develop a Staybridge Suites hotel at Florida’s St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport. The $13.2 million, 106-room hotel is scheduled to begin construction in August and is expected to open in late 2009. The hotel will be managed by Harris Hotel Group, an affiliate of AHDP. \tThe development comes in the midst of the St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport\u2019s $10 million renovation project. In addition to undergoing an extensive terminal renovation project, the airport has also recently completed runway extension projects and has increased its capability for international destinations. \t\u201cThe airport is like hotel central for Pinellas County,\u201d said Bob Humberstone, director of properties for St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport. \u201cWe have a seasonal system here where floods of tourists come in for extended stay periods to enjoy our beaches.\u201d \tWhen the hotel is complete it will become one of the 15-plus hotels in the vicinity of the airport, joining properties under such banners as Comfort Inn, Marriott and Best Western, amongst others.\u00a0 AHDP nonetheless feels confident that the new hotel will be able to compete despite the amount of local competition. \u201cThe newest hotel in the area is the Homewood Suites hotel which opened in February of 1998,\u201d said AHDP and Harris Hotel Group president Clyde Harris. \u201cSo basically there\u2019s been no new product there for the last 10 years.\u201d \tSarasota, Fla.-based AHDP and has been involved in the national hotel development scene for the last three years. To date, the firm has yet to open any hotels, however it is currently in the process of developing 12 hotels, three of which are set to open by the end of the 2008 calendar year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
