Frank Gehry\u2019s signature undulating, asymmetrical forms will mark the exterior of the architect\u2019s first New York City residential building, according to newly released renderings.The design will mark the Beekman tower, a 904-unit project under construction on Spruce Street between William and Nassau Streets in Downtown Manhattan. When complete in 2009, the 76-story, 1.1\u00a0 million-square-foot\u00a0 tower will rank among the biggest new projects Downtown, along with the four office towers scheduled for completion early in the next decade at the World Trade Center site. According to the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center\u2019s Web site, the Beekman project is also one of more than two dozen residential projects currently under way in Downtown Manhattan.The project\u2019s developer, Forest City Ratner Cos., provided the images to CPN on Friday when a scheduled afternoon news conference was cancelled following a crane collapse at a residential construction site on Manhattan\u2019s Upper East Side. That accident\u2014the second such incident in two months\u2014prompted the suspension of all crane operations in New York City and is expected to draw further scrutiny to crane safety in the city. In a first for a New York City development built on private land, the Beekman will also include a public school, which will accommodate 630 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Rounding out the plans are a 21,000-square-foot facility for the New York Downtown Hospital, 1,300 square feet of ground-floor retail space, and a 175-space, below-grade parking structure.
