Brown Shoe Co. has decided to bring its operations in Madison, Wis., to its current headquarters location in suburban St. Louis in a move that will pave the way for the development of a new $568 million mixed-use project at the 12-acre home base.Located in the City of Clayton about 10 miles west of St. Louis, the Brown Shoe headquarters site will leave the existing 600 headquarters employees under one roof with 270 Madison staff members, and ultimately, as many as 700 more employees that will fill jobs that will be created over the next several years. In addition to the headquarters facilities, the property is also home to two vacant office structures.Brown Shoe and its retail division Famous Footwear will serve as the anchor for the mixed-use project.The actual square footage the company will occupy, Brown Shoe officials say, will depend on the needs of both the company and the community. Brown Shoe has joined forces with Clayco and U.S. Equities Realty to formulate a plan for the creation of the new destination, and is working with city, county and state officials and associations to facilitate planning and approval activities for the project.Brown Shoe, which has called the St. Louis area home for about 130 years, plans to wrap up the relocation of its Madison-based employees by the close of the third quarter of this year.
